What to Do If Your Alfa Oven Produces Too Much Smoke

Troubleshoot excessive smoke in your Alfa oven with these tips on combustion, chimney maintenance, airflow, and fuel selection for optimal cooking.

If your Alfa oven is emitting excessive smoke, the issue may be related to combustion or smoke evacuation. Identifying the cause and applying the right solution will help improve oven efficiency, reduce residue buildup, and ensure optimal cooking results.

🔎 Causes and Solutions for Excessive Smoke

1️⃣ Using the Wrong Type of Wood (For Wood-Fired or Hybrid Ovens)

Unseasoned or low-quality wood burns inefficiently, creating more smoke and soot.

✔️ Solution:
✅ Use properly seasoned hardwood (moisture content below 20%) for clean and efficient combustion.
Best wood types: Oak, beech, olive – slow-burning and low smoke production.
🚫 Avoid softwoods (pine, fir) – they produce excess smoke and residue due to high resin content.

2️⃣ Incorrect Fire Management (For Wood-Fired or Hybrid Ovens)

❌ Adding too much wood at once can choke the flame, reducing combustion efficiency and increasing smoke.

✔️ Solution:
✅ Start the fire with small dry kindling before adding larger logs gradually.
✅ Maintain a steady, active flame – a weak fire produces more smoke.
✅ Avoid overloading the oven with too much wood at once.

3️⃣ Clogged or Improper Chimney Installation

❌ If the chimney is blocked by soot or ash, smoke cannot escape properly.
❌ A chimney that is too short or has too many bends can reduce draft and cause smoke buildup.

✔️ Solution:
Regularly clean the chimney to remove soot buildup.
✅ If the oven is installed under a covered area, the chimney must extend at least 1 meter above the structure to ensure proper airflow.
✅ If you've extended the chimney, consider installing a butterfly valve to regulate airflow.

4️⃣ Poor Airflow Regulation (For Wood-Fired Ovens)

❌ If the oven does not receive enough oxygen, combustion is incomplete, leading to more smoke.

✔️ Solution:
✅ Keep the oven door slightly open during startup to ensure proper airflow.
✅ Place the wood on one side of the oven, leaving enough space for air circulation.

5️⃣ Gas-Related Issues (For Gas Ovens)

❌ A dirty burner or incorrect gas settings can cause unusual smoke production.
Incorrect gas pressure (too high or too low) affects combustion efficiency.

✔️ Solution:
Clean the burner to remove any soot or debris.
Ensure the gas regulator matches your fuel type (propane or natural gas).
Check gas pressure stability and make sure the bottle or gas supply is properly adjusted.

6️⃣ Oven Not at the Right Temperature

❌ A cold oven produces more smoke, as combustion is not yet optimized.

✔️ Solution:
✅ Wait until the oven reaches at least 300-400°C before starting to cook.
✅ Avoid adding large amounts of cold wood at once, as it lowers the temperature and increases smoke output.
